Sing-along Thursday: She’s so mean

October 30th, 2008

Return to Rural has already posted hers, and I’m having network outages here. I know I still owe you a list of B’s, which I’ll post later tonight, assuming the tubes aren’t clogged up here.

Today’s song comes to you from the 80’s, and was one of my favorites in grade school. “Wild Wild West” before Will Smith got a hold of it.

I’m stealing this idea

October 23rd, 2008

I really enjoy Return To Rural’s Sing Along Thursdays, where she picks a music video to share with the world. So I’m going to do it too. Hopefully you don’t mind, TMC?

Today’s pick comes from a CD I’ve been constantly listening to in the car, and not just because it’s one of 3 CDs I have in there. Broken Social Scene’s “Almost Crimes.” And yes, that’s Feist.

Tegan and Sara

May 9th, 2008

Tyra, Kim, and I saw Tegan and Sara last night at the Murat Theater in Indianapolis. They were awesome! They ended up playing almost every song from “So Jealous” and “The Con,” as well as a few from their older albums. They sound extremely good live, even better than they do on their albums (real talent, not studio magic)!

They also interacted very well with the audience, telling funny stories and joking around. The lighting person kept turning on the audience spotlights, which allowed the band to see us out there. We were sitting in the 4th row of seats, about 10 feet from the stage (yes, sweet seats), and it was like having the light of a thousand suns burning in our eyes, but it usually only lasted a few minutes every 4th song or so. It did, however, allow Sara to spot one audience member constantly giving them the finger. During the encore, while Tegan was constantly messing up the lines to “I Know I Know I Know” (it was funny, and most of the audience was very forgiving, fortunately), Sara finally got tired of seeing some drunk, sunburned girl flipping her off and had security escort the offender out (to many cheers from the rest of the audience).

Sadly, neither Tyra nor I brought cameras, so no pictures from our great seats. :-(

Also, I’m typing this from a new Eee PC. It’s tiny, and the keyboard is tiny. I feel like Homer Simpson when he is on disability for being morbidly obese (“If your fingers are too fat to dial 9-1-1, mash them against the keypad now”), and I keep hitting wrong keys. I’m trying it out to see if I like it enough to use it as my portable in Alaska. Maybe.

Lez Zeppelin

November 16th, 2006

Tuesday night, Julie and I went to The Vogue in Broadripple to see Lez Zeppelin, an all-woman Led Zeppelin tribute band.

I went in open minded, just happy to be out at a concert and looking forward to hearing some Zeppelin tunes. Fortunately, the ladies on stage totally rocked!

I think my favorite part of the concert was the bassist, Lisa Brigantino, playing a long fugue on the keyboard. No one quite knew where it was going, but when she ended and the band immediately broke full force into “Kashmir,” I think a lot of people almost peed their pants.

Another highlight was anything the drummer, Helen Destroy, played. She was definitely channeling John Bonham, and her drumming was some of the best I’ve ever seen.

I noticed that the singer, Sarah Mclellan, has a voice that’s pitched just a little lower than Robert Plant’s, which I think lead me to feel that the songs were being performed a little slower than originally played. Or maybe I’m just crazy.

Anyway, definitely check them out if you get a chance.
