…when the sun was able to break through the cloud cover.

I found that in folder of pictures I thought I had posted, but that one slipped through. I also meant to continue the story of us getting to Alaska, but I just found an entire 4gb memory card full if images I haven’t even imported yet, from our time in Washington and British Columbia. So I will need to break up the catchup posts even more, because some of these pictures need to be seen!
That might be a job for the weekend, because I’m pretty busy with Journalism work this week, including preparing to interview candidates for my position!
Tonight we’re going to see two documentaries at the Homer Documentary Film Festival: Young@Heart and Man On Wire. Should be fun!

After waking up Skippy this morning, I looked outside and commented that it was beautiful, and I should take a picture, and then shrugged and started to go back to the computer. She said I had better grab my camera, get out there, and take a freaking picture. So I did.
We were covered in fog most of the day and night yesterday, but the sun came out this morning and burned most of it off. Here’s what I saw when I looked out the window:

I took another shot that looks better in black and white:

It isn’t fair really, that I can walk out on my deck in sweatpants and socks and take pictures like these. I’ll just have to learn to live with the guilt, I guess.

I was chatting with Kyle this morning, and he asked me how Alaska was. I looked outside to see the sun rising, and it was so pretty, I ran out to get some pictures.
One of these days I’m going to get up early not to work for Journalism, but to actually take my time and capture a good sunrise here. These pictures suffer from poor preparation, and dirty equipment. My camera’s CCD appears to have some specks of dust on it, and what appears to be a tiny hair. Living with 2 cats and 2 dogs can have it’s disadvantages (besides the whole money for food and care, and the box of poop in the house thing).
Pre-dawn:

EDIT: I reprocessed this picture to bring out more of the light and color from the sunrise. Here it is:

Our cabin:

The fireweed is starting to turn color, another sign of the impending winter:

This is the first time I’ve seen direct sunlight in at least a week. Maybe 2. I need a filter to reduce the flare, because this could have been a lot cooler:

We’ve had a whole lot of rain the past week and a half. It was sunny the first few days after we arrived, then Alaska pulled the old bait-and-switch, plummeting the temperature by 15-20 degrees and covering the sky with clouds.
The rain has made taking care of the dogs more of a chore, what with the constant threat of slipping and falling on our butts while holding 30 pound bucket of dog food, not to mention being cold and wet. However, having 36 dogs happy to see us and our buckets, and the affection we get to lavish on them after they eat is more than worth the slight discomfort of the season.
Here are a couple of pictures I took when the sun lit up the lighter cloud cover over the mountains. The light was so bright beneath the darker clouds, it was hard to look at directly.

A little later, it became a little less intense, so I got out my telephoto.

Here’s the view from our porch yesterday. It rained most of the day, but we were in Soldotna and Kenai, picking up a new bed and a bunch of dog food. This is what we saw for the final 20 minutes of the drive, and it stayed for another 30 minutes after arrived home.
