Fire in the sky

October 13th, 2008

I was finishing up some work on my computer this morning, when Skippy said I should go out and take some pictures of the imminent sunrise. Also on my to-do list for the morning: using the outhouse and then feeding the sled dogs, the usual routine. What ensued, once I stepped outside, can only be described as the unavoidable pull of photography on my sight and mind. You might use the term “addiction,” if you so chose.

It started out rosy, contrasting nicely with the white-capped mountains.

I took a few pictures, and went back inside to suit up and complete the other two items on the list. I stepped back outside, and the view had become even more beautiful. I ran back in and grabbed my camera and tripod.

Okay, that finished, I went back inside to put away my camera and tripod. I made it halfway up the path to the outhouse before turning to look and see everything go from beautiful to mind-numbingly amazing. Back to the house, grab the camera and tripod, run!

In total, I took 130 pictures this morning. My hands were numb (it was 24 degrees F), I was covered in snow (there are 6 inches of snow on the ground, more where it drifts), and I still had to go to the bathroom. But I think I managed to capture at least a little of the beauty we saw this morning!

Scenes from my porch

October 7th, 2008

I finally got around to taking out the video camera the other day, before we got buried in snow, and tried to record the sunrise. Except I was a little late setting up, and I don’t know my camera very well still, so basically it’s not what I was hoping it would be. I also shot some of the scenery, and an overview of the dog yard.

I compressed the sunrise(n?) from 5 minutes to 25 seconds, and I also deleted the audio because the camera microphone sucks. Someday I’ll take a better video, but for now, this is what I have. I do like seeing the sun move more horizontally than vertically. That’s cool!

Sunrise on the 29th

September 29th, 2008

Skippy and I went outside this morning to let the old dogs out at 8 this morning, and I ran back inside to get my camera after seeing this:

How’s that for some color?

By the time I had gotten a good exposure, changed lenses, and moved up the path, the red had faded. Here’s what I was able to get with our cabin in the frame:

And finally, a leftover picture from last night, taken after the panorama seen in the previous post.

Another day, another beautiful sunrise

September 22nd, 2008

One benefit of working for Journalism in the wee hours of the morning (aside from getting a paycheck), is getting to see the sun rise almost every day. Some days (like, most) are too cloudy for a decent view, but occasionally, days like today come along.

I was taking out the old dogs and noticed the sun was going to rise over the mountains in a few minutes, so I ran inside and grabbed my camera. I had the 105mm on it, which was fine, since I’m getting tired of taking the same pictures with the same 17-55mm lens. I also took the opportunity to hit up some macro shots of the flora around here.

Here comes the sun, it’s alright…do n’do do doooo

Closer…

Taa Daa!

It dropped down to 32 last night, and ice formed. I like this little ice ball.

All hail the bringer of the Internet!

Morning sun on an evergreen.

The fireweed is changing, because fall has arrived.

There are a lot of plants here I haven’t identified. This is one. But it’s fuzzy.

Up close and personal on a fireweed leaf.

Sunrise on Tuesday

September 9th, 2008

I was chatting with Kyle this morning, and he asked me how Alaska was. I looked outside to see the sun rising, and it was so pretty, I ran out to get some pictures.

One of these days I’m going to get up early not to work for Journalism, but to actually take my time and capture a good sunrise here. These pictures suffer from poor preparation, and dirty equipment. My camera’s CCD appears to have some specks of dust on it, and what appears to be a tiny hair. Living with 2 cats and 2 dogs can have it’s disadvantages (besides the whole money for food and care, and the box of poop in the house thing).

Pre-dawn:

EDIT: I reprocessed this picture to bring out more of the light and color from the sunrise. Here it is:

Our cabin:

The fireweed is starting to turn color, another sign of the impending winter:

This is the first time I’ve seen direct sunlight in at least a week. Maybe 2. I need a filter to reduce the flare, because this could have been a lot cooler:
